A Time in St. Moritz
Top 10 reasons we are ‘into' StMo:
1. Altitude (many other fabled Euro resorts are just too low for reliable snow)
2. Attitude. It might be the equal proximity to Milan as to Zurich that creates a cultural vibe we've not experienced at other resorts. Also, the Engadin Valley has been a travel portal between the North (Germany/Austria) and the South to Italy. Maybe this is why it seems to handle tourists warmly. And while St Moritz is viewed as an elite place, it’s got quite a fun/adventurous vibe (eg, Cresta Run)
3. The lovely lakes, right in town, St Moritzersee and Silvaplana. For those familiar with Ketchum, it’s as though Pettit Lake was 100 metres from the center of town with Redfish attached. And the lakes get even more interesting in the winter than in the summer (check out White Turf).
4. Four ski areas. In addition to Corviglia (South facing), right across the valley is North facing Corvatsch, and 10km up the road, the glacier at Diavolezza and Lagalb.
5. Mountain apres. There are about 30 INDEPENDENTLY (i.e. not the resort) owned restaurants. Very different experience from skiing in the US. We will camp out at one (Chamanna) on Wednesday.
6. The dozen fantastic little towns nearby. It’s not just St Moritz (dorf)…..within 20 minutes, in one direction: Celerina, Pontresina, Bever, La Punt, Madulain, Zuoz and in the other: Silvaplana, Surlej, Sils Maria, Maloja
7. The seasons, yes, all of them.
8. Lindsey wanted to make special mention of the cows and the clocks . She likes things that Moooo and are on time.
9. The Palace, Kulm, Dracs, Corviglia Club, SkiClub Alpina, St Moritz Bobsled Club….
10. Winter tourism was born here in 1850 and without the inspiration Harriman got from StMo in the early ‘30’s, maybe Sun Valley wouldn’t exist (if we haven’t already told you why, ask us and see the inspiration for the Sun Valley logo).
Bring the Bright!
Lindsey has brought the bright colors to Kipp. So, the trend in the vein of cocoa mouse, beige babies, griege and latte layers is out for us this week! Everyone is a crayon in one of 5 colors (Head to Dress Code). Not all the time, but for sure on Tuesday night and Wednesday day while skiing or at Chamanna. Think vintage ski gear/Slim Aarons, celebratory attire. We would love to NOT see a navy or black suit all week! Here is some inspiration.
Where will I get some sleep?
